Songs that sound like other songs

I'm not proud that I know some of these songs, but I do know them, so
oh well. I'm sure we've all had to endure radio favorites such as
Creed and Shakira at work. I happened to notice how much their hits
not only suck, but rip off other hit songs as well.

-Creed's "Are You Ready?" sounds like Stone Temple Pilots' "Vaseline"
-White Stripes "Fell in Love with a Girl" sounds like "Middle of the
Road" by The Pretenders
-Ultra Vivid Scene's "Special One" sounds like Big Star's "September
Gurls"
-Verve Pipe's "Villians" sounds like Smashing Pumpkins' "Starla"
-Rob Zombie has a song that came after his song "Dragula" that you can
sing the chorus to "Dragula" over and you'd never know the difference
-Shakira's "Underneath Your Clothes" sounds like The Bangles' "Eternal
Flame"
-The Pretty Things "S.F. Sorrow" song sounds a lot like some Donovan
song
-Pavement's "Silent Kid" sounds like Buddy Holly's "Everyday"
-Offspring's "Why Don't You Get a Job" sounds like The Beatles'
"Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da"
-Butthole Surfers' "TV Star" sounds like Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry
Heart"
-Puff Daddy's "I'll Be Missing U" sounds a helluva lot like the Police
song "I'll Be Watching You" (sorry, couldn't resist)

Every Creed song sounds pretty much like every STP song and vice-versa.

Maybe they are not hits, but I wanna mention a few more:

Neil Young's "Helpless" is basically the same as Bob Dylan's "Knockin' at
Heaven's Door"

The Flaming Lips' "Fight Test" sounds like Cat Stevens' "Father and Son".
It really ruins the whole Yoshimi disc for me.

Funny you should mention that. Apparently it sounded a little too much like
Father and Son. http://www.nme.com/news/105428.htm

Kinda surprising, since I didn't think Fight Test was even a hit. I'm old
enough to remember the whole George Harrison "My Sweet Lord/He's So fine"
fiasco. Of course My Sweet Lord was a mega-hit. IIRC, he admitted the
similarity and paid up, but claimed it was subconcious. I can believe it. I
once "wrote" and recorded a whole fucking song just to realise I'd ripped
off the chord progression from Hotel California but with different key and
tempo.

Thanks for the info.

Everytime I try to play some song I've written, everyone's like:

"Shit, you can play radiohead?"

Woe is me and my song writing abilities.

I write songs because I can't play well enough to play most other people's
songs. I'm a spaz.

Hey! I used to be in the same boat. Then I realized that songs sound harder
then they naturally are. All beatles songs, for instance. Even radiohead.

Piece of cake.

Piece of crumb cake.

Nobody should lay claim to a song being written by them especially in
popular music. How many blues songs were played by thousands of musicians
without proper credit given? Well the credit was given, the fact that the
song spread so far is an honor in itself. The worst example of so called
plagurism was the Rolling Stones/K.D. Lang thing from a few years back,
where they were forced to put her name on the songwriting credits because
they copped a riff from "Constant Craving" unintentionally. Bollocks. Why
the fuck isn't all that Led Zeppelin royalty money going to the real
bluesmen? If you're going to complain about one, complain about them all, or
sod it and just play whatever you want.

Ditto. There's only 12 notes in Western music.
And there's only so many combinations of those
12 notes. And there's only so many combinations
that sound good on the radio. And who the fuck
can really *own* something abstract like music
anyway?

one time me and a buddy of mine were drunk and we decided we were going to come
up with the worst song of all time, and we accidently wrote Institutionalized
by Suicidal Tendencies...which is sort of ironic i guess because i think thats
a great song.

I thought the Pretty Things were too busy ripping off the Beatles and Pink
Floyd.
I have to admit I like them anyway.

I had a theory when this came out that every song was a rip-off of another
song. Thats the most obvious.
Pepper sounds like Beck. Hmm. I haven't listened to this in a long time. I
remember one of the songs had
a Pretenders riff buried in it. Hell, I guess i\I'll have to listen to this
again; I can't remember all these songs by the titles...

Good thread...

The Smashing Pumpkins song "Disarm" is almost identical to Lou Reed's "Sword
of Damocles".
The Ghostbusters Theme song sounds a lot like Huey Lewis' "I Want a New
Drug"
Any given Oasis song sounds like any given Beatles song (ok, cheap shot) :p
REM's "Hope" sounds close to Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" (so much so that REM
gave Cohen a writing credit)

I think songs sounding alike can be attributed--to a point--to being a genre
thing. I can't stand rap or hip-hop, so all that shit sounds the same to me.

I remeber back in the day when grunge was the new big thing. Whenever Nirvana,
Pearl Jam, or STP came on the radio we'd say"oh, they're playing Stone Temple
Pearlvana again. It must be 9:15 already".

Radio killed music.

I forgot some.

Sublime's "What I Got" sounds like "Lady Madonna"
Steve Miller Band's "Keep On Rockin' Me" has the same opening riff as
the Free song "All Right Now"
Interpol's "Obstacle 1" sounds like a combination of Red Hot Chili
Peppers "By the Way" and Television's "Marquee Moon"
Foo Fighters "Enough Space" bears heavy resemblance to the Pixies
"Tame", but Frank Black was sitting right next to Dave Grohl when he
recorded the vocals, so I guess it qualifies as a tribute/homage.

Great thread.

"Hoodoo Voodoo" off the Wilco/Bragg Mermaid series cops the "Lady
Madonna" bassline wholesale.

"Hungry Heart" also sounds like the Jam's "Fresh Carnation"

The accapella part of Violent Femmes "Never Tell" fits perfectly with
the refrain of Talking Heads "Animals"
